On Thursday, the police arrested a 20-year-old cleaner, Ali Hassan, in Abuja for allegedly stealing bicycles worth N1.9 million.

The police charged Mr Hassan with no fixed address before the Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Stanley Nwaforaku, told the court that the complainant, Mr Mohammed Aliyu of Durumi, Abuja, reported the case at the Durumi Police Station on December 23.

Mr Nwaforaku said that on December 17, at about 6:00 a.m., the defendant and another person stole three bicycles worth N 1.9 million.

He said the bicycles belonged to Jonah Izuka of Durumi, Abuja.

The prosecutor said that during a police investigation, one of the bicycles worth 400,000 was recovered from the defendant.

The judge, Aliyu Kagarko, granted the defendant bail of N2 million with one surety in like sum.

Mr Kagarko ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

He adjourned the case until February 16 for a hearing.
