A 40-year-old man, Inyangake James, has claimed that he heeded to a voice to kill his 70-year-old mother, Mma-Offiong James Peter.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, disclosed this in a statement in Uyo on Monday.

According to the police, the suspect reportedly killed his mother at about 9am on April 4, at Ikpe Annang village in the Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state.

The statement indicated that the suspect in his confessional statement to the police claimed the voice he heard told him to “kill her, kill her.”

Lamenting the rising cases of relatives killing their family members, the state’s police spokesperson added that one Solomon Isaac, who killed his 18-year-old son last year, had also been arrested.

The statement read, “The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested one Inyangake James Peter, 40 years old, for gruesomely murdering his biological mother, one Mma-Offiong James Peter, about 70 years old on 4/4/2024 at about 9:00am at Ikpe Annang Village in the Essien Udim LGA.

“The suspect, who confessed to the crime, has been transferred to the state CID for discrete investigation. The suspect on interrogation alleged that he had a voice saying ‘kill her,’ ‘kill her’ and he decided to oblige. Similarly, one Solomon Asuquo Isaac of Ikot Obok Nsit in the Nsit Ibom LGA who murdered his son, one Iboro Isaac, 18 years old, last year as a result of family misunderstanding, has been arrested.’’

The police spokesperson said that both suspects would be arraigned in court upon completion of investigation.

In another development, Mr Macdon, said that the Anti-Robbery Squad of the command, conducting a stop and search operation along Calabar-Itu highway, on April 9, 2024, apprehended one Ekemini Edet Akpan of Ekpene Ikpan village.

He said the police operatives found exhibits in his possession a one locally-made gun, one revolver pistol and 18 live cartridges.
