Senegal have become the first African nation to crash out of the knockout stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Three Lions of England at the Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday night.

The Teranga Lions and Morocco were the only African teams that progressed to the round of 16 in this year’s tournament but Senegal’s defeat today halved the number.

Two first half goals from Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane and another in the second half by Bukayo Saka secured England’s spot in the quarterfinals, setting up a clash against defending Champions France for a place in the semifinals.

Senegal had the better chances of scoring in the opening minutes of the game. They came close thrice but were unable to convert those chances with England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford making a crucial save to prevent one of those attempts.

However, it was the Three Lions that took the lead in the 38th minute when Jude Bellingham gave a cut back to Henderson to put England upfront before Kane scored his first goal of the competition to double the lead five minutes later.

Bukayo Saka extended the lead to three in seven minutes into the second half to increase his competition goal tally to three. There was no real action for the rest of the evening as Saka’s  goal secure the victory for England.
