Resident doctors begin five-day warning strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has begun a five-day warning strike after the expiration of its fresh ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu’s administration over unpaid allowances and salary arrears.
The association announced the decision in a social media post on Friday titled ‘Declaration of strike action’ released by its secretary-general, Oluwasola Odunbaku.
“Good morning, NEC Members, thank you all for your continued cooperation and understanding. As clearly stated in our earlier communique, the strike is scheduled to commence at 8:00 am today (Friday),” Mr Odunbaku said. “All Centre leadership is expected to guide their members accordingly. Further updates will be communicated to NEC members in due course.”
According to the doctors, the decision to embark on industrial action came after a six-hour virtual “Extraordinary National Executive Council” meeting.
The doctors took the decision after the expiration of its 21-day ultimatum, issued in July and later extended by 10 days, which elapsed on September 10.
The doctors’ grievances stemmed from the non-disbursement of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, payment of five months’ arrears from the revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, and outstanding specialist and hazard allowances.
