Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, dethroned emir of Kano, on Wednesday, met with Niger Republic coup leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani.

Mr Sanusi, who is the spiritual leader (Khalifah) of the Tijaniyah Islamic movement in Nigeria, in company of others, met with Mr Tchiani in Niamey, the capital of Niger.

Accompanied by some other persons, Mr Sanusi was seen in a viral photo with the junta leader.

Niger’s military, in a coup, ousted President Mohammed Bazoum from office two weeks ago, suspending the constitution and declaring curfew and blocking Niger’s borders.

Mr Sanusi’s meeting with Niger’s junta leader comes as ECOWAS threatens to invade Niger while warning coup plotters to relinquish power and return to their barracks.

It is still unclear whether Mr Sanusi met with Mr Tchiani on personal grounds or as a representative of ECOWAS.
