Seven unemployed men were on Monday docked in an Upper Area court in Karu, Abuja, for allegedly constituting nuisance.

The police charged Emmanuel Lebechi, Oriyomi Adeinka, Godwin Madaki, Daniel Udo, Ebuka Augustine, Barnabas Patrick, Ebuka Ejezie for criminal conspiracy, making the atmosphere noxious to health and constituting nuisance.

The prosecution counsel, Olanrewaju Osho, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on October 16, in Nyanya area of Abuja.

He said a patrol team, while patrolling around black spots in Nyanya, had arrested the defendants smoking dry leaves (weed) suspected to be marijuana.

He said during the police investigation, the defendants could not give a satisfactory explanation of what they were all doing at the black spot.

According to him, the act of smoking “Indian Hemp” by the defendants was causing discomfort at the neighbourhood.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 97, 192 and 199 of the Penal Code. The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The Judge, Ishaq Hassan, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N50,000 each with one surety each in like sum.

He ordered that the sureties must live within the court jurisdictions and adjourned the case until November 8, for hearing.
