A Kano Sharia Court on Wednesday ordered that a 52-year-old civil servant, Bashir Saleh, be remanded in a correctional centre for allegedly beating up his wife.

The police charged Mr Saleh, who lives in Kabuga Quarters, Kano, with assaults and causing grievous hurt.

The judge, Ismai’l Muhammad-Ahmed, who gave the order, adjourned the matter until August 22 for a hearing.

Prosecution counsel, Insp Abdul Wada, told the court that Fatima Muhammed of Hotoro Mahuatta Quarters reported the matter at the Hotoro Police Station on July 20.

The prosecutor said the complainant alleged that the defendant beat her up over a minor argument at about 9:00 p.m.

He said the offence contravened section 165 of the Penal Code. However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
