Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has promised prompt action on workers’ welfare following a peaceful protest against the removal of fuel subsidy, resulting in economic hardship and high transportation fares.

On Wednesday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress(TUC) in Kebbi staged a peaceful protest in Birnin Kebbi.

They converged at the Cabinet Office, opposite Haliru Audu Stadium, where they were allowed to march in to meet Deputy Governor Umar Argungu within the premises of his office, where a protest letter was presented.

The NLC chairman, Kilani Abdulwaliyu, told the deputy governor that the governor had hit the ground running by awarding different contracts which would positively impact the people.

However, he said workers have continued to face challenges following the removal of fuel subsidy and therefore sought the state government’s intervention to increase workers’ salaries, leave grants, transportation logistics, and prompt distribution of palliative.

The governor, represented by the deputy governor, addressed the unions and their members, informing them that the state would do everything possible to ensure workers’ welfare was adequately addressed.

The governor also informed the unions the state was yet to receive any palliative from the federal government. He said the government will constitute a committee to distribute it when the federal government sends it.

The governor acknowledged the unions for their peaceful protest and promised to take action on all their demands.
