The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called for increased community involvement in solving the nation’s deteriorating insecurity.

Mr Abubakar, represented by Jabbi Kilgore, the district head of Kingori, made the call during a town hall meeting organised by the Kukah Centre for Peace in collaboration with Global Right on Tuesday in Sokoto.

The sultan said bad governance, injustice and inequality contributed to insecurity. He urged leaders at all levels to be fair in dealing with their subjects and know they would give an account of their stewardship after leaving this world.

In his keynote address, the bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Kukah, also identified religious intolerance, fanaticism and injustice as some of the factors responsible for insecurity in the country.

Mr Kukah also said sectionalism, fanaticism, injustice and religious intolerance were responsible for insecurity in the country.

Mr Kukah urged stakeholders at the meeting to unite to form a common front in curbing the menace, saying insecurity knows no religion.

Governor Ahmad Aliyu, represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry for religious affairs, Abubakar Torankawa, reiterated the commitment of the government to partner groups and associations in promoting peaceful coexistence in Sokoto.

Police commissioner Ali Kaigamaso emphasised the need for public support of community policing.

Mr Kaigamaso said the police would continue to partner the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in tackling criminals.
