On Thursday, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal affirmed Governor Douye Diri’s reelection victory.

A three-person panel of justices delivered the judgement in an appeal filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Timipre Sylva.

According to the court, there was no reason to set aside the May 27, 2023, judgment by the Bayelsa governorship elections petition tribunal, which had also affirmed the result of the November 11, 2023, governorship poll.

The court also ruled that the APC and Mr Sylva failed to provide enough evidence to prove that elections were held at 184 polling units of Nembe, Ogbia and Southern Ijaw by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), therefore there could not have been any collation conducted there.

The appellate court, therefore, unanimously struck out Mr Sylva’s appeal, ruling that the suit was incompetent, lacking in merit, and an abuse of court process.
