Authorities in Houston, Texas, searching for a missing woman, on Tuesday, discovered the lifeless body of a yet-to-be-identified woman in the jaws of an alligator.

The BBC reports that the alligator was shot and killed to stop it from further damaging the body of the victim.

According to officials, the remains of the woman were thereafter recovered from the jaws of the dead alligator.

Police suspect the body is that of a woman in her 60s but have yet to ascertain her identity. They are also waiting for autopsy results to find out if the animal killed her or if she died before the alligator discovered her remains.

Alligator attacks in Texas are said to be rare, with the last incident reported in 2015. According to ABC 13, a 28-year-old man was killed while swimming in Orange.
