The police command in Delta State has confirmed the derailment of the train plying the Warri-Itakpe route but said that no casualties were recorded.

The spokesman for the command, SP Bright Edafe, made the disclosure in a telephone interview with journalists in Warri on Friday.

Mr Edafe said, “It is true, no death, no casualty was recorded in the incident.”

A passenger onboard, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the incident occurred on Thursday at Abraka, in the Ethiope East Local Government Area of the state.

Another passenger said that the train was travelling from Itakpe in Kogi State to Ujevwu in Delta State when one of the coaches derailed from the rail track close to the Abraka train station.

The passenger said, “The incident occurred at about 7:15 pm, a few metres from the Abraka train station. I could not proceed with my journey. Some passengers jumped out through the doors while the train was slowing down movement, dragging the remaining coaches along with the derailed one. Some passengers sustained minor injuries, resulting from the stampede that ensued.’’

Recall that the distance between the Abraka train station and the Ujevwu Terminal station is about 20 minutes by rail.
