A transgender woman has been moved from a women-only prison to another facility after impregnating two female inmates earlier this year.

Demi Minor had been transferred last month from New Jersey’s Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Clinton to Garden State Youth Correctional Facility, a prison for young adult offenders located in Burlington County, Dan Sperrazza, a spokesman for the state’s Department of Corrections (NJDOC), told Fox News.

Ms Perrazza said Ms Minor, currently serving a 30-year sentence for manslaughter, is currently the only woman incarcerated at the facility and was placed in the vulnerable unit.

In April, Fox News reported that two women at the Edna Mahan facility became pregnant after “consensual sexual relationships with another incarcerated person.”

The facility under New Jersey’s policy allows trans women inmates who have yet to undergo gender-reassignment surgery to be held in the facility. It houses more than 800 inmates and began housing transgender women last year after a lawsuit by a trans inmate who lived in men’s prisons for 18 months and the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey.

Last year, two prisoners from Edna Mahan had filed a lawsuit asking New Jersey to scrap its gender identity policy for prisons, claiming they were harassed by trans inmates and that transgender inmates were having sex with female prisoners.

At the time Demi Minor was sent to jail, she was a 16-year-old boy who was found guilty of murder and a carjacking. Formerly known as Demetrius Minor, he killed his foster father Theotis Butts, in July 2011. He had pleaded guilty of the crime, along with a carjacking case in the same year. As a result, he was awarded a 30-year jail sentence.

Demetrius Minor started to transition to a woman in jail in 2020, and thereafter Ms Minor was transferred from a male prison to Edna Mahan. She also changed her name from Demetrius to Demi to reflect her assumed gender.
