Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice have been found guilty of a conspiracy to trade human organs.

The Ekweremadus were convicted on Thursday in London court as part of the case that broke June 2022 when the couple tried to secure an organ transplant for their daughter. Sonia, 25, has battled kidney ailments for years. She was among those tried in the matter but was not found guilty.

Mr Ekweremadu, 60, was found guilty of arranging young man from the streets in Lagos, taking him to a hospital in London with a budget of about £80,000, BBC reported from the court.

The couple proceeded to Turkey when it turned out that the initial plan would not work after over complicated kidney mismatch. The material benefit of the arrangement was the ground for the conviction.
