WTT Contender Lagos: Egypt’s Badawy Farida pulls off major upset as South Korea, China face off in mixed doubles final

The 20-year-old remains the only African in the event, which has earned her the maximum support of fans in the arena.

Egypt’s Badawy Farida has pulled off a major upset in the ongoing 2024 World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Lagos after the world number 331 defeated world number 28 Batra Manika to reach the quarterfinals of the women’s singles event. 

Farida defeated heavily favoured Manika 3-2 (11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9) to make her way into the last eight, where she will face another Indian opponent, Mukherjee Ayhika, who defeated Nigeria’s Bello Fatimo, for a place in the semifinals of the Women’s Singles.

The 20-year-old remains the only African in the event, which has earned her the maximum support of fans in the arena. 

Meanwhile, the South Korean duo of Lim Jonghoon and Shin Yubin will face the Chinese duo of Xu Huiyao and Luo Jiecheng in the final of the mixed doubles event at the 2024 World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Lagos. 

The Koreans defeated the Indian duo of Kamath Girish Archana and Thakkar Vikash Manush 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 12-10), while Huiyao and Jiecheng defeated another Indian duo of Chitale Parag Diya and Shah Utpalbhai Manush 3-1 (11-7, 7-11, 3-11, 10-12) to reach the final.
