As the ongoing 2024 WTT Contender Lagos enters its penultimate day on Saturday, the men’s singles and the women’s singles events have already taken shape as the round of 16 ties in both events were decided on day three of the tournament on Friday.

Unseeded China’s Ning Xiankun surprisingly beat India’s Desai Harmeet (WR 84) 3-0 in another major upset and will now face Germany’s Ovtcharov Dimitrij (WR 19), who defeated China’s Kang Youde (WR 616), for a place in the last eight of the men’s singles.

Indian legend Achanta Kamal Sharath (WR 44) defeated Chinese unseeded Luo Jiecheng 3-0 to book a last-eight showdown tie against France Poret Thibault (WR 111), who pipped India’s Gnanasekaran Sathiyan (WR 71) 3-2.

It will be an all-German affair as Walther Ricardo (WR 101) tango Mengel Steffen (3-0) for a place in the last four — Ricardo defeated India’s Shah Utpalbhai Manush (WR 180) 3-1 while Steffen thrashed Denmark’s Lind Anders (WR 60).

Meanwhile, South Korea’s Lim Jonghoon (WR 34), who thumped Nigeria’s Adegoke Muizz (WR 345) 3-0, will face India’s Thakkar Vikash Manav in the fourth quarter-final tie.

Manav thrashed China’s Fei Junhang (WR 709) in their round of 16 game.

In the women’s singles quarter-final games, defending champion Shin Yubin of South Korea (WR 8) will face India’s Mukherjee Sutirtha (WR 125) — Yubin defeated unseeded Chinese Yao Zixuan 3-1 in the round of 16 while Sutirtha beat South Korea’s Yoo Siwoo (WR 237) 3-1 too.

Akula Sreeja (WR 43), who defeated Nigeria’s Rabiu Aishat (WR 590) 3-0, will lock horns with Ghorpade Yashaswini (WR 99) in an all-Indian clash — Yashaswini defeated compatriot Chitale Paraj Diya (157) 3-2 in the round of 16.

Portugal’s Shao Jieni (WR 57) will face China’s Ding Yijie (WR 504) for a place in the last four — Jieni thrashed unseeded Nigeria’s Fashola Aminat 3-0, while Yijie beat compatriot Xu Huiyao (WR 756) 3-1.

It will be a first-ever quarter-final in a WTT tournament when Egypt’s Badawy Farida (WR 331), who created a major upset on day three after she defeated India’s Batra Manika (WR 28), faces India’s Mukherjee Ayhika (WR 140) on Saturday.

Ayhika eliminated Nigeria’s Bello Fatimo (WR 165) in a 3-1 scoreline game to reach the quarter-finals.
