UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights

1/11/2025

Adopted by the UN Human Rights Council in 2011, these principles set the global standard for how states and businesses should prevent and address human rights abuses linked to commercial activity. The UNGPs are based on three pillars: the state duty to protect, the corporate responsibility to respect, and the right to remedy. The full text includes the 31 principles, a commentary and explanation for implementation, and background on the Human Rights Council’s endorsement. The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre hosts and promotes the text, along with practical tools to support implementation.
