106.
She is a girl just past puberty, full of life, and lying in his arms almost
naked. Trembling, he kisses her forehead, eyes, lips, neck, and
shoulders.
They embrace for a long time without saying anything except for
asking each other if they are still cold. What they need to say to each
other has already been saying. All they want now is to be close to
each other, to listen to each other's breath and heartbeat, and feel the
touch of each other's skin.
Suddenly, the Amerasian says in a faltering voice:
THE AMERASIAN (CONT'D)
Do... do you want me to...?
The girl nods softly.
THE AMERASIAN (CONT'D)
Aren't you afraid?
The girl shakes her head gently.
THE AMERASIAN (CONT'D)
What...what if you become pregnant?
THE GIRL
I will give birth to and raise the
baby. When you are gone, I will be
very lonely and miss you very much.
The baby will be the image of you,
your flesh, and blood. The baby
will always be by my side to
comfort me, just as you are for
your mother.
The Amerasian and the girl herself are surprised that she has said all of
this. The Amerasian is so happy he cannot speak. He falters.
