As she listens to her son's talk, mixed feelings arise in her heart. She
ends up comforting him.
THE AMERASIAN (CONT'D)
Well, do not torture yourself over
this. Nothing is lost yet. But
don't go looking for them right
away. Let me think first if there
are any good solutions.
25 EXT. THE SIDEWALK – MORNING
THE MAN spreads a sheet of nylon on the sidewalk and goes through
the motion of putting out several dozen used books for sale as he
does every day. But his mind burns with the desire for revenge for the
shame and suffering he has endured. Some people stop by to inquire
about the books on display. He doesn't even answer them, and they
walk away.
26 EXT. THE FARM – MORNING (FLASHBACK)
THE MAN is working as a field laborer. He makes a feeble attempt to
break the soil with a hoe. The other workers laugh at him and make fun
of him because he is so weak.
27 EXT. THE STREET CORNER - MORNING (FLASHBACK)
THE MAN is selling lottery tickets behind a small sidewalk stand. He
looks at the passersby and despairs that no one is stopping to buy
anything from him.
28 EXT. THE GIRL'S HOME - AFTERNOON
THE MAN takes out an old bayonet and begins to sharpen it on a
stone in the garden. The bayonet is a military one. It has a pointed tip,
and the edge is sharp.
The sound of the bayonet scratching on the stone cuts into his heart.
