32 INT. THE GIRL'S HOME - DAYTIME (FLASHBACK)
THE GIRL is pacing aimlessly in the yard in front of her house. She
then walks toward the grass field ahead, gazes at the faraway
mountains, and goes back to sit beside a large tomb in the cemetery.
The girl is standing in front of her father's bookcase. She looks at one
book after another, then takes one and reads attentively while sitting
on a chair near the window (The book is "Butterfly Soul Dreaming of a
Fairy" by Khái Hung).
33 EXT. THE CEMETERY - AFTERNOON (FLASHBACK)
An intermittent breeze blows in the sunshine. THE GIRL is sitting
alone beside? Large tomb with a roof. She sees THE AMERASIAN
walk into the cemetery from the road. He walks slowly from one tomb
to another, stopping now and then as if his mind is elsewhere.
Suddenly he sees her sitting by herself at the tomb. He opens his eyes
wide and looks into her eyes for a little while and then asks:
THE AMERASIAN
Why are you sitting here?
THE GIRL
(Pointing in the direction of her home)
My house is nearby, right over
there!
THE AMERASIAN
Why aren't you in school?
THE GIRL
My parents let me stay home this
year because they are short of
money.
The Amerasian moves closer and sits down next to her. He remains
