THE MAN (CONT'D)
THE MAN (CONT'D)
I say so, not to defend the
American imperialists, but because
we must be fair when judging
history. We must find the true
cause of the war. It is obvious the
imperialist countries had their own
ambitions. The Americans did. So
did the Russians. Both the US and
the USSR funded the Vietnam War
because it was also their war. The
Vietnamese people, on the other
hand, were themselves divided, and
they invited foreign troops and
arms to come into the country to
massacre each other. No matter what
the reasons and the ideals offered
to justify the war, the true nature
of the war is the same. You may say
I am a reactionary, but I say it
all the same because to me it is
the truth. Before, we "fought
against the Americans to save the
country", but now we are begging
them to normalize diplomatic and
commercial relations. Some people
even say we are "inviting the
Americans in to save the country".
What does that say about the
meaning of all the sacrifices this
country has endured?
Policeman B is disconcerted as he listens to the man's ramblings and
the lack of regard for him when he tries to open his mouth to insert a
comment. In the end, he can take it no longer and raises his arm and
voice to speak.
POLICEMAN B
All right, let's stop arguing.
These are big issues, and we can
debate them later.
