Sharing is good, especially when it involves cars

Treehugger reminds us that tomorrow is National Liftshare Day, when everyone is encouraged to make sure as many seats as possible are filled for those essential car journeys.

Here in the office, it won't have much of an effect as most people walk, cycle or take public transport (there's no parking anyway, which is an excellent incentive to leave the car at home). But the number of cars on the road that only have one passenger (and hopefully that's the driver) is staggering. I did see some figures the other day but can't lay my hands on them right now - trust me though, they really are staggering and my own anecdotal evidence collated on my way to work bears this out.

The day is promoted by liftshare, an organisation that helps hook up drivers with passengers who are heading the same way. More passengers in each car means less cars on the road, and of course that means less carbon dioxide emissions plus the bonus of splitting the costs. So if you're planning to drive to Glastonbury next week, find other people to fill your car with or see who's already going and bag a lift. You know it makes sense.
