Is your energy bill as big as this?

This morning 50 Greenpeace volunteers shut down the head office of British Gas owners Centrica using the world's biggest energy bill.

We're there to tell Centrica to end its dangerous addiction to expensive and polluting fossil fuels. It is time to get off the gas price rollercoaster and start investing in clean, renewable energy and energy efficiency to bring bills under control and tackle climate change.

Take action now to tell Centrica to end the energy rip-off!

It's time to make all homes and businesses more energy efficient

The Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University have just put out a new report calling for new laws to increase energy efficiency standards in all of the UK’s 26 million homes and 2 million business properties. Implementing these recommendations would mean that energy use in all buildings in the UK result in zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Home sweet home: our London HQ

As organisational director at Greenpeace UK, Matthew Pollitt has the job of making us put our money where our mouth is by improving our environmental performance, and reporting on progress to our supporters.

As a campaigning organisation we measure success in terms of shifts in policy or public perception. Internal efficiency and effectiveness - my responsibilities as organisational director - are quite rightly seen as a means to an end rather than an end in themselves.

Similarly, people don't generally visit the Greenpeace website to learn about what I do. One exception is the interest we get in what we are doing to minimise our own impact on the environment.

This week Greenpeace launches our vision for a European energy revolution – a practical blueprint for a renewable energy future. Using only proven technologies we can phase out fossil-fuels, cut CO2 emissions by over 90% by 2050 and ensure energy security – without a huge reduction in living standards.

All eyes were glued to the TV in the office this lunchtime to see whether Alistair Darling's budget would deliver the kind of changes we need to see if we want to give ourselves the chance to keep the lid on climate change.
