As well as providing green electricity for 80,000 homes the wind farm could also boost the local economy, by increasing the number of visitors to Swansea Bay.
The UK's first commercial wind farm in Cornwall received 350,000 visitors in its first eight years of operation. An energy centre was opened at the site in 2001 and received 50,000 visitors in its first year. Meanwhile the Centre for Alternative Technology, an educational centre about renewable energy (in a valley with three nearby wind farms) is mid Wales' biggest tourist attraction.
In Scotland, a Mori poll was undertaken in 2002 regarding wind farms in the Argyll area. 80% of tourists said they would be interested in visiting a wind farm if it were open to the public with a visitor centre.
In Denmark people take boat trips to see the offshore wind farm at Horns Rev and tour agencies run boat trips out to Middelgrunden, near Copenhagen.
