First ever subsidy free offshore wind: Greenpeace response

Greenpeace response to the first ever subsidy free offshore wind being awarded to DONG Energy for three projects in the German North Sea. 

 

Hannah Martin, Head of Energy at Greenpeace UK, said:

"The announcement of the first ever subsidy free offshore wind project in Europe is a watershed moment for the world's renewable energy market.

Investigation finds Australian bank Macquarie could be poised to asset strip UK Green Investment Bank

  1. Evidence uncovered of potential preparation for ‘asset stripping’ of GIB will add to concern around the deal from former ministers Greg Barker and Vince Cable and business figures such as Richard Branson.
  2. Macquarie preferred bidder despite track record of UK ‘asset stripping’ activity linked to other UK infrastructure acquisitions including M6 and Thames Water. 
  3. Green groups add voice to calls on Government for sale to Macquarie to be stopped.

An investigation has uncovered a process within the Green Investment Bank (GIB) establishing corporate structures commonly used in preparations for ‘asset-stripping’, ahead of its purchase by controversial Australian bank Macquarie from the UK Government for an estimated £2bn.

Imagine a wind turbine so big that it would take Usain Bolt 19.32 seconds to run across the 200m diameter of its blades (before plunging tragically into the sea). This is what wind manufacturer Dong says will help bring the cost of offshore wind down to below that of new gas-fired power stations (the size of the blades, not Bolt’s premature demise).

If a year is a long time in politics, then 2016 is a lifetime away. Yet the government has decided not to commit the UK to clean electricity until after the next election.
