Tractor: cattle feed
Most of the European retailers and food producers have chosen not to use genetically modified (GM) crops in their products. But that has not stopped the flood of GM crops to Europe.
Despite widespread public rejection of GM food and crops, the UK imports approximately 3.5 million tonnes of unsegregated soya and maize each year, mostly for use in animal feed. Maize distillers grains, maize gluten and soya are the main GM ingredients that are fed to livestock. 95% of world soyabean production is used for animal feed.
Pork, beef and poultry that we buy in supermarkets could have been fed with GM feed but there is no way to find out. Since there are still no labelling regulations for animal fodder in the European Union, it is impossible for farmers to avoid animal feed containing GM-ingredients.
