Trader Joe’s gets a little greener

Why is an old (sea) dog unlike an old pirate? Well, apparently, you really can teach an old pirate new tricks.

Following the success of the sustainable seafood campaign pioneered here in the UK a few years back, other Greenpeace offices have been publicly pressuring their own supermarkets to sell only sustainably sourced fish in order to help save the oceans.

Latest up was Trader Joe's in the US, famed in the States for the motley crew of pirates which head up its advertising campaigns.

The store ranked 17 out of 20 when Greenpeace evaluated their seafood polices along with other major American supermarkets. It was clear, Trader Joe’s needed to do better.

But, after months of hearing from activists and shoppers alike about the need to stop wiping out sealife for profit, Trader Joe’s finally got the message.

From now on Trader Joe’s stores will remove red-listed seafood, and work with independent, science-based organisations to implement a sustainable seafood policy based on strong, lasting guidelines.

And now that Joe's has seen the light, they've vowed to sink their piratical hooks into all the other supermarkets to get them to save the oceans too.
