Hot on the heels of the successful Kingsnorth trial outcome in Kent comes more good news for those of us committed to preventing new coal projects gaining a foothold across Britain. Yorkshire Against New Coal announced itself on the national stage at the end of last week with a launch event at Leeds Civic Hall.
At least a hundred letters objecting to plans for a new open-cast mine at Newton Lane near Castleford were signed during a couple of hours of campaigning outside the Hall, and then presented to a Leeds City Council meeting. The YANC launch, which included a banner drop, gererated excellent media coverage – including interviews on BBC Radio Leeds before the launch, an article in the Yorkshire Post and a news item on the BBC News website.
