Update, December 2009: John West introduces new sustainability policy »
Claiming that they 'only purchase fish which is caught with no harm to the marine environment’ despite unrestricted use of purse seining with FADs, the John West general seafood policy is lacking in even basic credibility.’
The majority of John West's tuna comes from purse seiners with no restriction on the use of Fish Aggregation Devices (FADs).
There is no evidence of John West demonstrating stock or species selectivity in terms of where and how they source skipjack and yellowfin. John West even sell tinned albacore caught by purse seine in the North and South Atlantic despite clear conservation concerns expressed by the authoritative Monterey Bay Aquarium.
John West sometimes fails to tell you what kind of tuna is inside its tins and never tells you how it has been caught.
Despite claims that 'as the largest and best-known supplier of canned fish in the UK, John West takes its responsibility to the marine environment extremely seriously' this company has so far failed to express any public support for the establishment of marine reserves. Like national parks at sea, marine reserves are critical to ensuring the long term viability of tuna and other fish stocks.
Verdict: It's an embarrassing last place for the biggest seller of tinned tuna in the UK.
