BONN, October 1999 - Greenpeace described German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's unexpected call to have the Kyoto Protocol to combat climate change ratified by the year 2002 as a step forward for the international climate negotiations but questioned Germany's own timetable for ratification and its commitment to reduce greenhouse gases.

Greenpeace revealed a dioxin scandal today in the industrial area of Aspropirgos near Athens. Activists, on board the Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior, approached a waste dump area, where a steel recycling plant has been dumping wastes for the last 20 years. An estimated one million tons of rusts and filter dusts are dumped there just next to the sea. A huge banner reading "Danger dioxins" was hanged on the pile of waste.Greenpeace revealed a dioxin scandal today in the industrial area of Aspropirgos near Athens.

Greenpeace sees boost for onshore decommissioning industry

Oslo, 22 October 1999 - Greenpeace today welcomed Phillips Norway's proposal to decommission onshore, all fourteen steel oil platforms from the North Sea "Ekofisk I" field, as a significant step that will boost the development of the onshore decommissioning industry. Today Phillips Norway released their proposal for the disposal of the "Ekofisk I" offshore field, by far the largest upcoming decommissioning project in the North Sea. Over the next few years, fourteen steel platforms and one concrete offshore installation will be decomissioned and have to be dismantled.

Inupiat Eskimos and Greenpeace court challenge to BP Amoco Arctic oil drilling

October 21st, 1999 - Greenpeace today joined Inupiat Eskimos living on Alaska's North Slope to file a lawsuit to challenge BP Amoco's drilling for oil in the Arctic Ocean off Alaska's north coast. The lawsuit challenges the US Federal Government for permitting the project on the grounds that it lacks an adequate oil spill plan and jeopardizes the marine and coastal environment of the Arctic Ocean, and the Inupiat subsistence way of life.

Patients exposed to toxic chemicals in PVC medical products

Amsterdam, 20 October 1999 - Laboratory test results released by Greenpeace today showed the presence of a toxic additive in medical devices made of PVC. The same toxic additive was banned in soft PVC toys last year by nine countries due to concerns about its release and ingestion.

Greenpeace v. the Government

Mr Justice Kay has indicated he will give his verdict within three weeks on Greenpeace's case against the Government for failure to apply the EC Habitats Directive to oil exploration in the Atlantic Frontier.

The case ended Thursday afternoon after Mr Justice Kay heard all the arguments from Greenpeace, the Government and the 10 oil companies. The QC representing the oil companies asked the judge to refer the case to Europe if he found in Greenpeace's favour on certain matters.

Oil companies in bid to stop public and environment groups protecting wildlife

Ten oil companies today attempted to strip European citizens of the right to enforce powerful wildlife laws when their lawyers argued in the High Court that Greenpeace cannot make the Government enforce the European Union Habitats Directive.

La Coruna action update

La Coruna, 14 October 1999 - After spending the night at the Headquarters' prison of the Guardia Civil of Coruna, the Greenpeace volunteers arrested yesterday after a non-violent action against the Sogama Incinerator Plant were brought into Coruna's Court in order to testify.

Among the 20 arrested are campaigners from Madrid, Galicia, the British captain of the MV Greenpeace and most of its international crew. All of them participated yesterday in the peaceful blockade of the construction of an incineration plant the Government of Galicia is building in Cerceda.

Greenpeace demands long-term health monitoring following nuclear accident

Tokyo, 14 October 1999 - Following the Tokaimura nuclear accident, Greenpeace Japan has sent a letter of demands to Ibaragi Prefecture, the Science and Technology Agency, and the Health and Welfare Ministry today requesting the registration and long-term health monitoring of all persons present in the two kilometer zone around the accident site during the 20 hours it occurred

The demands are based on Greenpeace's investigation into the Tokaimura accident that concluded that official health checks were insufficient.

Senate failure to ratify Nuclear Test Ban Treaty threatens U.S. and global security

WASHINGTON, October 13, 1999 - Greenpeace today condemned the U.S. Senate vote to kill the landmark Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty as a gross dereliction of its duty to protect the public, the planet and future generations. Greenpeace is accusing the U.S. government of acting like a rogue nation rather than a leader on nuclear non-proliferation.
