HISTORICAL NOTE
The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge (MVNWR) was established in 1976 with the help of Edward Crozier and Elaine Mellot, as well as environmental organizations including the Burnsville Environmental Council, Bloomington Natural Resource Council, Lower Minnesota River Valley Citizen’s Council, the Friends of the Minnesota Valley, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The refuge is currently comprised of over 14,000 acres of land, nearly 70 miles along the Minnesota River, from Bloomington to Henderson, Minnesota. MVNWR’s mission is to provide habitat for a large number of migratory waterfowl, fish, and other wildlife species threatened by commercial and industrial development, and to provide environmental education, wildlife recreational opportunities, and interpretive programming.
