African National Congress (ANC) has expelled its former leader and South African President Jacob Zuma after failure to win majority seats in the June 14 general elections.

“Former President Jacob Zuma has actively impugned the integrity of the ANC,”  Fikile Mbalula, ANC secretary general, said at a press briefing on Monday.

The party secretary general said Mr Zuma was expelled due to his conduct, which violated the ANC’s constitution.

“This conduct is irreconcilable with the spirit of organisation discipline and letter of the ANC constitution,” said Mr Mbalula, adding that Mr Zuma rubs a dangerous platform that “appeals to extremist instincts that may foment social unrest.”

Mr Zuma’s expulsion from the ANC followed his leading of a new political party, uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), in the general elections that saw the ANC fail to win the majority seats it has held tight since 1994.

The failure of the ANC, a party popular for its active involvement in the anti-apartheid struggle under Nelson Mandela’s leadership, to win majority seats in this year’s election has compelled the formed government of national unity with other parties.
