A chief magistrates’ court in Kaduna on Thursday ordered the remand of two men in a correctional centre for allegedly stealing cables worth N975,000.

The defendants, Francis Dogo, 27 and Aaron Amana, 28, both residents of Kakuri Kaduna, are standing trial for conspiracy and stealing.

The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, gave the order after the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo told the court that the investigation into the matter was ongoing.

Mr Emmanuel, however, ordered the defence counsel, A. A. Sadiq, to file a formal written application for the defendants` bail.

He adjourned the matter until April 22 for a hearing on the bail application.

Earlier, the prosecutor told the court that the defendants committed the offence on February 28 at Down Quarters Kakuri Kaduna.

Mr Leo stated that the defendants had, on the same date, at about 10:00 p.m., broken into Apex Steel Construction Ltd. and stolen cables worth N975,000.

“The defendants were caught by some security guards, who handed them over to the police,” he said.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In his oral bail application, Mr Sadiq prayed the court to admit his client to bail in the most liberal terms, citing sections 158 and 168 of the Administrative of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).
