The Speaker of the Ogun Assembly, Oludaisi Elemide, has urged members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to continue to make necessary sacrifices in healthcare delivery to residents.

The speaker stated this when he played host to members of the state branch of NMA led by Dr Azeem Ashimi, in Abeokuta on Monday.

Mr Elemide explained that the state government was already addressing the issue of shortage of manpower confronting the various government hospitals.

He assured the association of government’s continued commitment to addressing the challenges facing the health sector.

The lawmaker commended members of the association who had decided to stay and practice their profession in Nigeria.

“I want to commend the Nigerian Medical Association for dedication and hard work.

“They play a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of our citizens, and we appreciate their tireless efforts,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Ashimi solicited the assembly’s support for the amendment and domestication of law criminalising suicide.

He stated that people who suffered mental health issues were the ones contemplating suicide and should be treated as such and not throwing suicide victims into jail.

He stressed the need to address shortage of manpower occasioned by migration and implementation of enhanced salary structure for medical practitioners.
