People with Disabilities have urged the Ondo State government to include them in budgetary allocations rather than treating them as objects of charity.

The Executive Director of Disability Not A Barrier Initiative, Benjamin Olajide, made the appeal during a visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ondo State Council.

Mr Olajide said the group visited NUJ to seek media support for their advocacy, particularly on budgetary allocations that recognise PwDs’ rights rather than mere charity.

He noted that PwDs consistently appealed to the state government to incorporate them into budgetary planning across all sectors of the economy.

According to him, government interventions for PwDs in the state have mostly been charity-based, which undermines their rights and dignity.

Mr Olajide stated, “All we are asking from the Ondo State Government is equity, inclusion, and justice in its programmes and policies.’’

He also urged parents not to keep children with disabilities indoors, stressing that medical solutions exist for most conditions and require timely intervention.

Mr Olajide explained that hiding such children denies them necessary care, while DINABI promotes equity, inclusion, and justice for PwDs across the state.

He stated, “We want NUJ to help raise awareness, especially among those in power, so the state government can attend to our needs. We do not want sympathy, pity, or charity. What we demand are our rights as citizens of Ondo State.’’

He appealed to parents not to keep disabled children away from society, saying disability should not be seen as shameful.

Mr Olajide noted, “There are medical solutions to many disabilities. Bring the children to us, and we will direct you to appropriate quarters for assistance.’’

Responding, NUJ State Chairman, Leke Adegbite, assured that journalists would continue to ensure the voices of all citizens were heard by government and stakeholders.

Mr Adegbite, represented by NUJ vice chairman, Ayodeji Alabi, urged PWDs to always update NUJ on their programmes to receive adequate support and media coverage.

He said, “We are aware of some of your challenges. I assure you that journalists in Ondo State will continue amplifying the voices of the people.’’

He further encouraged PwDs to carry NUJ along in their advocacy to strengthen media support for their activities and demands.

Also present at the courtesy visit was the State Secretary of NUJ, Olaoluwa Meishak.
