Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged lawmakers to work tirelessly for the good of Nigerians, describing the politicians as “exceptional.”

Mr Akpabio said this on Tuesday in Abuja at the resumption of plenary.

Mr Akpabio said, “Once again, let us be reminded that the Nigerian people have placed their trust in us, and it is our duty to honour that trust by working tirelessly for their well-being and the nation’s progress.

“As we resume our duties today, I warmly welcome you back to your duty posts. Let me take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to all of you for the journey we have embarked on together.

“You have been exceptional companions on this extraordinary journey, where the destination is a better, brighter, and more inclusive Nigeria for all.”

The Senate president added, “The challenges we have faced, the battles we have fought, and the victories we have achieved have shaped us into the custodians of our nation’s heritage. History will undoubtedly remember your dedication and commitment to the service of our great nation.”

He said the loss of soldiers and other security personnel and the tragic explosion in Port Harcourt that claimed innocent lives and caused widespread devastation highlighted the urgency of addressing safety measures and ensuring the well-being of citizens.

He said the increase in electricity tariff and petroleum prices emphasised the pressing need to address issues of affordability, inflation, and overall well-being of the nation’s economy.

He said, “It is our duty to address these challenges head-on and work toward a better future for all. Let us also not forget the importance of cooperation with our constituents. We were elected to represent their voices, hopes and dreams.

“It is through our engagement and partnership with them that we can truly make a meaningful impact on their lives and the development of our nation.”

Mr Akpabio said the Senate and the House of Representatives must collaborate and provide the required legislation to lift Nigerians.

“We must at all times collaborate and cooperate with the other arms of government, without compromising our constitutional duties, in order for our democracy to thrive,” Mr Akpabio said.

He said lawmakers’ efforts must be focused on restoring hope, righting wrongs, and upholding commitments to the well-being of the people.

“Together, fueled by a renewed spirit of fraternity, unity, and solidarity, we must move forward and cooperate. Let us pool our resources, talents, and ideas while respecting our differences and convictions of conscience,” said the senator.

He stressed that the fight against poverty and hunger must be total and relentless, addressing its root causes and restoring dignity to the marginalised.

He urged senators to approach the work ahead with unwavering determination and a deep sense of responsibility.
