A Sokoto chief magistrates’ court on Monday remanded an 18-year-old student, Aliyu Sanusi-Umar, who was charged for alleged reckless driving and causing the amputation of the leg of a female student, Fatima Suleiman.

Mr Sanusi-Umar was arraigned for the offences of reckless driving, driving a car without a driver’s license, causing serious injury and causing the amputation of a human leg.

The police prosecutor, George Idoko, said the defendant drove the car in a dangerous manner and crushed Ms Suleiman’s leg shortly after she wrote her final year examination at Khalifa International College, Sokoto.

Mr Idoko said the victim was seriously injured and transported to Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto (UDUTH), where her leg was amputated due to the fracture and severity of the mutilation of her leg that needed urgent medical attention.

He said the incident occurred on Thursday, and Ms Suleiman was still under medication at UDUTH, adding that the offences contravened the provision of Penal Code laws.

When the charges were read before him, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

Chief Magistrate Hauwa’u Haruna-DogonDaji ordered the defence counsel to file a formal application for the bail of the defendant.

She remanded the accused in the custody of the Correctional Center and adjourned the case until August 29 for further mention.
