After an attack on the Swedish embassy in Baghdad, the Swedish staff in the Iraqi capital returned to their Scandinavian home on Friday.

“The embassy’s operations and its expatriate staff have been temporarily relocated to Stockholm for security reasons,” the Swedish Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry added that the staff had returned to Sweden on regular flights.

Iraq expelled the Swedish ambassador on Thursday amid an escalating crisis over a Quran desecration in Stockholm.

Demonstrators in Baghdad stormed the Swedish embassy and set it on fire ahead of the planned Quran burning.

The extent of the damage to the embassy building is unknown.
