At least two people have been killed in the southern Jiangxi province of China while 10 others were wounded following a knife attack targeted at school children, police in the Asian country said.

According to the BBC, the incident occurred in a primary school in Guixi around midday on Monday. Most of the pupils are between the ages of six and 12.

Chinese police said in a social media statement that a 45-year-old woman has been arrested in connection to the incident, stating she used a fruit knife to carry out the stabbing attack.

The incident is one of the latest episodes of growing knife attacks in China in recent months.

In May last year, a man attacked Zhenxiong People’s Hospital in Yunnan province, which left two people dead and 21 others injured.

Another one happened in July at a kindergarten in the south-eastern province of Guangdong, where six people, including three children, were killed.

In August last year too, a man with a mental health history attacked people with a knife in a residential district in Yunnan, killing two people while seven others were left injured.
