THE
CHARACTERS
The characters have no specific name. They are generic.
THE MAN – Around 40 to 50 years old. Skinny with sunken cheeks.
Former high school literature teacher before 1975. After the North's
victory over the South was allowed to keep his job but was then fired
for harboring anti-government thoughts. The man tried hard to make a
living by working at various odd jobs. Settled for selling used books on
the sidewalk. Tormented and utterly unhappy for having to live in
poverty and destitution in a society that has no use for his knowledge
and experience. Extremely confused, angry, and desiring only revenge
upon learning that his daughter was raped by a black Amerasian.
Relented when the love between his daughter and the black
Amerasian became apparent to him. Became despondent and listless
when the black Amerasian didn't return from America after 5 years as
promised.
Depressed and emaciated, has started having strange dreams.
THE GIRL'S MOTHER – Wife of the Man. Around 40 to 50 years old.
Used to be a vegetable grower. She became a housewife and peddler
of sundry goods after her marriage. Raised traditionally with minimal
education. She suffered greatly upon learning that her daughter was
raped by an Amerasian. Afraid that people would make fun of her
family if her daughter and the Amerasian got married.
THE GIRL - Around 16 years old. Dropped out of high school to help
her family in dire financial conditions. Very pretty.
Well-read for her age since her father used to teach literature and still
has a sizable collection of books. Was initially disoriented by the rape,
but later turned around because she knew him before the rape and
was somewhat attracted to him. Met with him secretly a few more
times after the rape and accepted his love for her. Spent a night
with him in a cave. She believed that he would marry her when he got
back from America. Waited 5 years for his return. She became
despondent and suffered a nervous breakdown
