girl behaving like two people in love. One day he catches up with the
Amerasian at his house, but cannot arrest him because Policeman A
is there and prevents the arrest from taking place. Policeman A
continues to threaten and extort gold from Amerasian's mother.
Meanwhile, misfortune continues to pile up for the parents of the girl.
The roadside shop they own is raided, and everything is confiscated
and taken to the Tax Office in a campaign to clean up the street. The
father only manages to salvage one book about the Kiều story during
the raid.
Despondent, he takes the book and wanders all day on the street like a
ghost. In the afternoon, he stops by a roadside pub, orders a liter of
wine, and drinks until he becomes drunk. It so happens that Policeman
A is also in the pub. He goes over to the old man's table to strike up a
conversation and to find out more about the old man's daughter and the
Amerasian.
Upon receiving news that the Amerasian is hiding in a nearby hamlet,
Policeman B sets out to find him. A deadly chase takes place between
him and the Amerasian on a hillside tea plantation. The Amerasian is
young, strong, and fast, and he continues to put distance between
himself and the policeman.
Then Policeman B fires his gun and startles the Amerasian. He
stumbles, and the policeman catches up with him. The two then argue
about the rape the Amerasian allegedly committed. The Amerasian
affirms that he loves the girl, and she loves him and that he will marry
her once he gets back from his trip to the U.S. Policeman B feels in his
heart the true love the Amerasian has for the girl. When the Amerasian
tries to run away, Policeman B raises his gun, and aims at the
Amerasian, but, at the last moment before pulling the trigger, he jerks
the gun barrel up and shoots at the sky. Policeman B has failed to
capture the Amerasian once again, but this time he feels relieved and
not as bitter as before.
The Amerasian asks the girl for a last meeting on the grassy hill before
he leaves for America. On the afternoon of the meeting, high winds
and a storm batter the grassy hill. As the girl stumbles and falls in the
