                                                           SUMMARY

One afternoon, when returning home from work and walking past a
cemetery, the man hears moaning sounds coming from among the
graves. He rushes in to take a look and is shocked to find his daughter
lying on the ground next to a tomb and crying. Her clothes are torn,

and there are signs of blood.
He understands immediately that his daughter has been raped. He
races back out onto the road to look for the perpetrator and sees a tall
silhouette running away and disappearing beyond the horizon.

He carries his daughter back to their house at the edge of the

cemetery, and he and his wife care for her and ask about what
happened. But she says nothing. The old couple is very sad and
distraught. They cannot cope with the disaster that has happened to
their 15-year-old daughter. After several days of questioning, the old

couple guesses that the man who raped their daughter is an
Amerasian, who lives in a nearby hamlet and whom they also met
previously. The realization that the Amerasian has done this horrifies
                       them.

After thinking it over, the man decides to go to the Amerasian's home

to negotiate a way out because he doesn't want the rape story to
become public and damage his daughter's as well as the family's
reputation. The Amerasian's family consists of only two people: the
Amerasian and his mother. The Amerasian is the result of the love

between his mother and an American serviceman, who was stationed
near the hamlet and who disappeared after the war ended. However,
the US government is now implementing a policy whereby Amerasians
and their immediate family can immigrate to the US. This presents an
opportunity for the Amerasian and his mother to escape their current

                       poverty.
When the man tells the mother about the rape, she becomes enraged
because she thinks that he wants to extort money from her.

When the Amerasian returns home, his mother questions him about the

rape, and he admits that the story she has heard is
