Why was Glastonbury 2001 not at home on the farm?

The decision not to hold Glastonbury this year came from one simple cause: the people who jumped the fence last year.

Although the 2000 festival was the most successful in history, the number of people on site was significantly higher than the number permitted by the Public Entertainment Licence. If the steady rise in fence-jumping continued in 2001, Glastonbury would have been vastly overcrowded and dangerous to festival goers.

Work went into developing regulations that would allow the festival to take place, but these would not have been ready for the 2001 festival.

So these problems led Michael Eavis to decide to take a break this year to ensure the health and safety of future festival goers.

Luckily, virtual Glastonbury 2001 was created to fill this huge gap in the summer.

What can you do for the future?

  • Tell your friends that fence jumping is neither big nor clever- it is threatening the future of the festival
  • If you've jumped the fences in the past, resolve not to do it again!
  • Volunteer for work at the festival next year

Make the sensible choice! Don't jump the fence- walk through the gate and then you can make it happen.
