Rainbow Warrior 20th anniversary commemoration in Paris

On 10th July 500 Greenpeace volunteers gatherered in the Esplanade Tracodéro to create a human peace sign in commemoration of the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior 20 years earlier.

Below one of the British contingent, Greenpeaceactive member Richard Martin, decribes his experience of the event;

"In the shade of the Eiffel Tower, countless threads of the rainbow have come together, to commemorate the loss of the Rainbow Warrior and the murder of Fernando Pereira 20 years ago.

From the shadow of the bombs in London, and the terror of Kings Cross on Thursday, I had the enormous privilege of travelling to Paris to be part of that Rainbow, symbolising Peace in the centre of the Esplanade Trocadero.

Surrounded by a vast spectrum of Greenpeace activists from all around the world, we demonstrated that the way to overcome terrorism is through love and non-violence, not through war and hatred.

The bombs of evil men 20 years ago failed to sink the rainbow because of the hope, perseverance and determination of individuals to keep the spirit of Greenpeace alive. That spirit is individuals taking action to make change happen. It isn't about heroes, or warriors - it's about you and me standing up for what's important to us.

I am still in awe of the fact I get to take such action, supported by dozens of financial supporters, and to travel to Paris to make such a statement. So to the hope of a future without bombs, or the fear, ignorance and hatred that drives people to such acts of violence, and to a Green Peace."
