Big oil companies like Esso, Shell, BP, Texaco and JET are the bad guys of global warming. Their main business is producing vast amounts of oil and gas - fuels that are catapulting us towards a future ravaged by flooding, storms, drought and disease.
Despite these consequences, the oil industry shows no sign of shifting away from fossil fuels and giving people the choice of real green fuels like bio-diesel and hydrogen.
Between them the oil companies spend over 35 billion USD every year digging up more oil and gas, but they're still not supplying real green fuels at the pumps. That's bad news for the customer because where they put their money dictates the fuel choices we have tomorrow. And for these companies the choice is any fuel - as long as it's based on oil.
Worse still, companies like Esso, Shell, BP, Texaco and JET are using their power and wealth to stop any international action on climate change.
The oil and gas industry donated over 25 million USD to the US Republican Party in the recent race for the presidency. BP and Esso were two of the three biggest donors. The pay-back for the fossil fuel industry has been swift - half of George Bush's energy team work for oil and gas companies. Then just three weeks after his inauguration, Bush broke his pre-election promise to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and stated his opposition to the Kyoto Protocol - the UN climate convention.
