Reacting to the launch of the Liberal Democrat manifesto, Greenpeace executive director John Sauven said:
"The Liberal Democrats have set out the most progressive environmental policies of all the major parties, and they now have a real chance to make them count. As part of a coalition government, this party could establish red lines on issues like Heathrow and coal power and focus instead on developing the clean technologies that will define the 21st Century.
"It's absolutely vital that the Liberal Democrats use their influence to protect government investment in clean technology projects, which will help attract billions in private investment, create thousands of green jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy."
On the Liberal Democrat pledge to reconsider the Trident nuclear weapons system, Sauven continued:
"While both the other main parties maintain an inexplicable silence over the massive expense of Trident, only the Liberal Democrats have been bold enough to speak up.
"Their manifesto recognises that this cold war relic is a massive drain on our resources, and that the upcoming strategic defence review will be meaningless without proper discussion of a £97bn white elephant that even the military doesn't want."
