Here’s a prediction: the next UK government will do great things for global marine protection.

At this stage in a general election campaign it’s sometimes hard to find something that politicians wearing differently coloured rosettes can agree on, but with an unprecedented bunch of manifesto commitments, there’s a growing certainty that the next UK government will be an ocean champion.

Is Nick Clegg taking lessons from the Tea Party? With the so-called Charity Gagging Bill it's starting to look a bit like it. Do Liberal Democrat voters want charities gagged in the run up to the next elections?

Activists scale building in minister’s constituency

13 May, 2013

Greenpeace has this morning released confidential internal policy documents from Transport Minister Norman Baker that shows how he is blocking new legislation to reduce carbon emissions from new cars. The proposed law could save motorists up to £400 per year, and have been proposed by leading Liberal Democrat MEP Fiona Hall.

In the leaked briefing Baker and his officials call for ‘opposing’ a proposal by Liberal Democrat Fiona Hall, who sits on the Industry Research  and Energy (ITRE) committee of the European Parliament, which called for the reduction of CO2 emissions from all new cars to 70g CO2/km for 2025. In the document the minister explains why he wants MEPs to vote against his fellow Lib Dem’s proposal.

Posted by Louise Edge — 18 May 2011 at 4:32pm - Comments

Green investment for economic recovery and jobs has been a core part of the Liberal Democrat platform. Ahead of the Comprehensive Spending Review at Liberal Democrat conference, three prominent Liberal Democrat MPs, Martin Harwood, Julian Huppert, and Transport Minister Norman Baker, took a moment to add their voice in support of a Green Investment Bank.

Elephants and lemons: Lib Dems make Fox's bed of nails on Trident

This morning the Lib Dem conference voted unanimously for a review of the decision to replace Trident, and finally managed to prod their ministers into making some noise on the issue. This is a huge step forward for the majority of Britons who aren't convinced of the need to spend £97 billion on cold war weapons whilst public services are being slashed. Simon Clydesdale, our man on the conference floor, explains the implications:

Shirley Williams was asked recently what it was like being in bed with the Conservatives. She cannily replied that it was actually a case of two beds. And this morning the Lib Dems took the opportunity to make their bed in a distinctly different style to their Tory coalition partners when they voted to adopt an emergency motion on replacing Trident.
