The government has announced a new consultation on banning surface drilling from fracking in some conservation areas, including Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Greenpeace dismissed the plan as ‘designed to mollify concerned backbenchers but lacking the substance to actually protect the countryside from fracking pollution.’
Greenpeace campaigner, Hannah Martin said: “This announcement might have banned drilling rigs from littering the landscape, but the government isn’t banning fracking pollution spilling over into our most fragile and treasured countryside.

There was a time when it was rare to see solar power on rooftops here in the UK. Our cloudy skies and the high cost of panels meant the technology was out of reach in all but the sunniest parts of the country.
But over the last decade, things have changed dramatically.

Fracking firm Third Energy wants to frack for shale gas in Ryedale, North Yorkshire. But before they can go ahead they've got to obtain planning permission -- and right now North Yorkshire County Council is running a consultation on its website, inviting Yorkshire residents to email in with their views.

The government have today announced that they will introduce new guidance that will fast track fracking.
Greenpeace Head of Campaigns, Daisy Sands responded: "The contrast between government's view that local councils should be 'masters of their own destiny' and the new provisions announced today is staggering. Local residents could end up with virtually no say over whether their homes and communities are fracked or not. This is a clear affront to local democracy.

Greenpeace think that energy policy the world over should be
localised and democratised. Not only is it more efficient to generate power
near where it’s going to be used, but giving communities some control over
their power supply has numerous other advantages, many of which are being
smugly illustrated on a daily basis by Germany.
