Photographer, Will Rose, joined Greenpeace activists on an expedition to the Indian Ocean to remove dozens of destructive Fish Aggregating Devices. These FADs kill endangered marine life including sharks and turtles, but despite this, leading tuna brands John West and Thai Union continue to use them. Since our campaign launched, Tesco and Waitrose have threatened to remove John West from their shelves unless they clean up their act.

Imagine becoming a parent at the age of 65. It might seem miraculous but that is what has happened to the world’s oldest known wild bird, an Albatross living on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

The New Year’s storms have brought a lurid, unmissable reminder to UK beaches, with thousands of bright pink detergent bottles being churned up by the sea. As waves of highly-visible plastic trash hit British beaches, it’s a timely reminder of a much bigger problem: we are turning our oceans into plastic soup. It’s been estimated recently that about EIGHT MILLION TONNES of plastic ends up in the ocean each year.

Challenging the UK government to lead the world in ocean protection.

If I said to you that the UK government was responsible for rare sea turtles, endangered sharks, tropical coral reefs and quite possibly more penguins than any other country, you might think I was talking about some aquariums or zoos. It’s certainly not what you think about in UK seas, especially at this grey time of year (though of course we do have visiting turtles, many shark species, cold water corals, and puffins as penguin-wannabes). But across the world the UK has ‘overseas territories’. They are relics of a turbulent past when flags were planted across the world, and mostly, these days, they are islands – like Bermuda, Pitcairn, and Ascension. So, in turn, the amazing wildlife in the seas around these islands is effectively ‘British’.

If they thought they had avoided Greenpeace’s scrutiny, they were wrong. For the first time, we are checking what’s in the tuna tins in Aldi, Lidl, Ocado, Iceland, Budgens and Booths. They join a growing list of supermarkets we’ve surveyed about the tuna they use in their tins, and how it’s caught.

Green turtle swimming in the Maldives

Can you see the sharks shaking their tail fins and turtles clapping their flippers? CAN you?!

They’re doing their happy dance because of the recent good news from Asda.

The supermarket – which is part of the global Walmart group - has committed to applying the same sustainability standards to all the brands of tinned tuna they sell, not just their own brand.

Ocean heroes in a half shell: it’s World Turtle Day!

Sea turtles live in the ocean. They don’t loiter around so much as cruise the whole sea, taking in shallow coastal lagoons, stopping by seamounts, and crossing the open ocean on high seas highways, only ever returning to land to lay eggs.

They are truly creatures of the ocean. And they are pretty special.

Today is World Turtle Day – so what better excuse to shell out a bit of love and respect to these most iconic ocean ambassadors?

Today is World Turtle Day, a great opportunity to celebrate some of the world’s oldest creatures as well as draw attention to the sea turtles' plight. Terrific turtles have been swimming the world's oceans for more than 100 million years, but now face many dangers as they travel the seas.

Today is the International Day for Biological Diversity. That’s a bit of a mouthful, but put simply it’s a day officially set aside to celebrate the world’s wealth of wildlife. For 2014 the theme is Island Biodiversity.

Name that tuna

Tuna are fish, and they are wild animals. But to many people, they are simply understood as food. It can be a bit confusing when the short hand of ‘tuna’ is used, as it covers a whole family of species, from the relatively-tiddly and widespread skipjack, right up to the majestic but beleaguered bluefins.
