This morning a high level delegation of Church Leaders and members of the Scottish Parliament were refused a meeting by the Aldermaston Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) and turned away by armed police.

The delegation had formally requested a meeting with the Managing Director of AWE to ask why more than a billion pounds is being spent on new facilities and technical staff at Aldermaston despite the fact the government claim not to have made a decision on whether or not to replace Trident (1).

Greenpeace's response to CORWM

Responding to the Committee on Radioactive Waste's recommendations about UK nuclear waste disposal Greenpeace campaigner Jean McSorley said:

"CORWM is recommending we bury radioactive waste in a big hole in the ground somewhere in the UK. This is an environmental time bomb for future generations because the waste will inevitably degrade and leak. The least dangerous option would be to keep the waste on the reactor sites in accessible storage."

New report says Sellafield plans a 'bodge' as operators face prosecution

One year after a series of alarming errors resulted in 18,000 litres of highly radioactive dissolved spent fuel leaking in the THORP reprocessing plant at Sellafield, Greenpeace has published a report which exposes how the current plan to reopen THORP is an 'engineering 'bodge' which risks compromising safety. The publication comes as it was revealed that the plant's operators will be prosecuted over the accident.

George Bush

The truth is out. According to a confidential Pentagon document, the US government's masterplan for total global domination now includes using its nuclear weapons pre-emptively - even in conventional war situations.

A draft of "Doctrine for Joint Nuclear Operations" shows that instead of reducing the role of nuclear weapons as originally promised, the Bush administration is pushing aggressive new policies that are set to become normal US military practice.

30 March, 2004

Greenpeace today supported the European Commission's proposal to force BNFL to act more quickly to clean up the B30 spent nuclear fuel pond at its notorious Sellafield site in Cumbria.

Concern around B30, a 50-year-old nuclear storage pond, centres on the fact that it is so old that there are inadequate records of exactly what nuclear materials the plant contains. Estimates put the amount of plutonium in B30 at 1.3 tonnes.
